Today Nia & I spent the day in Oakland at Children's Fairyland with our friends Corinne & Cailyn (which is another post, soon to come). Afterward, as Cailyn and Corinne departed for an overdue nap, I turned to Nia. It was only 4p, so I asked if she wanted to head home, too, or stay in Oakland a bit longer. She opted to stay in Oakland. I thought a little while and then we had this conversation:
Me: Do you want to take a boat to San Francisco & get some dinner?
Nia, staring at me: What?! Really, a boat?! For real?
Priceless reaction! Yep, for real. So we drove around a bit till we found Jack London Square and the Ferry launch. And I double high-fived myself for making this bit seem pretty easy even though I had no idea where I was going (though driving toward the ocean was a give-away). And after a brief wait we were on our way.
My plan was pretty simple: Dine at the Ferry Building in SF then turn around and go back. Unfortunately, the Ferry Building is more of a daytime establishement. But a few things were open. We ended up sharing a really lovely meal at Il Cane Rosso. Got to say it felt pretty cool to hang out with my kiddo and enjoy the view of the Bay Bridge.
(Amazingly tender meatball, polenta, chard, & garlic bread.)
Afterward we hung out in The Book Passage a bit and shared a cookie. Then we were ready to go... but the ferry was not there. That was a chilly hour while we waited, and I regretted we didn't have more clothes, but we got back to the car in Oakland by 9:15p and Nia was asleep by 9:30p.
Done and done.
PS. Nia left this behind on the table at the restuarant.
She was so proud!
